While that thread is indeed hilarious, keep in mind that the thing cost $399 and was Mac and FireWire-only. It would never have taken off if it weren't for the big changes in future revisions that fixed those issues.

    No, this is incorrect.

Apple sold it's OS's for Mac hardware only, long before people started running OS X on PC's.

Mac OS's sold without hardware are sold as upgrades. End of story.
You're missing the point. If you have a Mac that meets the hardware requirements, you can purchase any version of OS X, there is no other software prerequisite. The fact that it is an "upgrade" is irrelevant, because you don't already to have any other software, other that what the computer originally shipped with.

For the people who thinks that Vista is too expensive:

Mac users: Spend more $ on hardware. Spend less $ on software.

Windows users: Spend more $ on software. Spend less $ on hardware.

What a shock the computing industry works both ways.
    Think again...

Robert Weston (Associated Press) (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060823/ap_on_hi_te/tech_test_mac_pro_3) and Yuval Kossovsky (ComputerWorld) (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9002545&source=NLT_MAC&nlid=62) both found the Mac Pro to be hundreds of dollars less than an equivalent Dell...

Skunk, all that you have presented above is one interpretation based on things we know about the history of the Canaanite people. This proposition posits that the history the Bible describes is not factually based, but a reinterpretation. What I have presented above are acknowledged facts and clear inferences which are drawn from the text of the Old Testament itself. Each one of those at the very least brings into question how the religious beliefs of the Hebrews as a whole differed from those of their polytheistic contemporaries, especially in the period before 580BCE. Abraham may have made a covenant, but it was not with Jehovah, it was with El. It says so in the bible. So much of the mythology, Noah/Utnapishtim, etc., is taken directly from other sources that it really beggars belief to treat the story of the Hebrew god(s) as anything other than a continuation of previous beliefs and story-cycles.

Don't believe things that are obviously false just because a computers says it. A computer's processor does not run at 59 degrees F after any amount of use, except maybe if you're outside in Siberia. Even if the temperature in the room is just 59 degrees, the processor is going to generate some heat. If the normal amount of heat is very roughly about 50-60 degrees F above room temperature, then, obviously, the temperature monitor you're using is recording incorrect data. One of the worst things about computers is that they seem to be so sure of themselves!

Speaking of such things, I had a especially dull person insist that the outside temperature was about 90 degrees when it was actually about 70 because he saw it on his computer screen (we're in Minneapolis, MN, and I assume he had set his weather page to Minneapolis, Kansas). I almost got into an argument with him, but decided to let it go.

No clue. I bet it would run but not all that well. I hope these comments on the rest of the Studio will calm some of the "sky is falling" pessimists. I'm not saying that FCPX is a home run yet but I'm more than happy to leave my torch and pitchfork in the shed based on what's been demoed so far.

I happen to work for a vendor that supplies Walmart.. I believe this story to be true.. Walmart breaks the antitrust laws everyday.. and get away with it since they bribe and payoff key people in the goverment.(They call it contributions)

I know a vendor(He owned the company) who supplied Walmart with quality vacuums and vacuum accessories.. Walmart decided that they wanted a better price for his vacuums and so they demanded that he cut the price of his vacuums by 30% and that he downgrades the build quality(They had a 10 year guarantee) so they would break down more often thus forcing people to buy more vacuums.

He was in the 4th year of a 10 year contract where it stipulated that HE decided the pricing and everything.. So he refused to lower the price of the vacuums since he would ACTUALLY LOSE MONEY if he sold them at the price Walmart wanted.. Walmart tore up his contract and kicked him out of the store.. when he threatened to sue them for breach of contract they laughed and told him to do it.. it would end up costing him millions to successfully sue Walmart and he would lose money if he attempted that.

I just saw the video about the hack in cNet. David Maynor used a third party wireless card to do the hack. My question is Why did he used a third party card?

Why use a third party card while the Macbook has built-in wireless already. Can he hack the built-in wireless card? It looks like that he cannot hack the built-in card so he used a third party card. My other question is Who would buy a third party wireless card for the MacBook? By doing so, makes no sense. I would like him to show us a video hacking the Macbook using Macbooks airport card.

The New York Post (http://www.nypost.com/business/retail_iation_business_tim_arango.htm) reports that Wal-Mart is warning Hollywood studios against partnering with Apple's iTunes Store for movie distribution.

According to studio executives, "Wal-Mart has overtly threatened to retaliate if [studios] go into business with Apple."

While Apple has only signed one movie studio (Disney) to the iTunes store, the early success (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060919142943.shtml) has caught the attention of other studios. One executive is quoted as saying "We all want to be in the Apple business".

The threat of Wal-Mart repurcussions, however, may temper enthusiasm as Wal-Mart controls a large portion of the retail market for DVDs.

The situation between [Wal-Mart] and Hollywood has gotten so heated and so high-level that Jobs recently phoned Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott to ask him to moderate his stance, according to a source.

While many people are looking for Apple to integrate a radio tuner into the iPod it isn't going to happen.

I would prefer the option to grab a quick weather forecast, news headline or actually hear a song I don't own once in a while, but that's not the iPod way. The iPod is all about your content not someone else's.

Get an iPod radio remote and stick it in your mouth ;)

Seriously tho, with the announcement of the BluPod (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/blupod-ipod-add-on-offers-caller-id-radio-features/)(FM Radio and Bluetooth Caller ID remote) it seems 3rd parties will jump in the FM tuner add-on to compete with Apple (hopefully at a lower price).

So far I have yet to see an official confirmation from a reputable (read "not-rumour") web site.

The "confirmations" flying around all seem to be the rumour sites referencing each other.

Until I see iLounge or MacWorld get an invitation I won't be getting my hopes up for an secret-Apple-ninja-attack event.

Try to spread the word Chundles

I've been trying to point this out for 3 days now and nobody seem to want to read it.

    http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/08/31/boot.camp.mac.gui/

In brief: Apple has confirmed plans to hold a special event on September 14, coinciding with rumors of an Apple movie store launch in that time period...

When I look at the graphic (http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/) for the 2011 WWDC, it makes me think that the 3D rumor may be accurate. Note the many 3D patents that Apple has been awarded over the past couple of years for precisely this type of thing. And the fact that Apple has used their graphics on prior occasions to tease what would be revealed at the event - most recently, for the iPad2 and how they teased the SmartCover...

I dont know if 3D is dependent on hardware (most of Apples products have front facing cameras at this point at least), or if it can be driven by software alone on existing devices.

    Thoughts?

If you're going to take a 3D picture, the best way to do it would be to use two cameras separated by a distance approximating the space in between your eyes. Both cameras take a picture at the same time. You now have two images taken at slightly different angles and after superimposing them, you get a 3D image.

If you want to display that image (or any 3D movie) without glasses, you need a lenticular screen, which would take the two images and using refraction, direct one image to the left eye and the other image to the right eye. This is what the Nintendo 3DS screen does.

So yeah, 3D is hardware dependent. To take a 3D picture/video, you'd need 2 cameras instead of 1. You'd also need a lenticular screen. And this is why I think the 3D rumor is BS: the iPad is made to be used in either portrait or landscape mode.

Once you rotate the iPad 90 degrees, the horizontally spaced cameras are now vertically spaced and no longer work. Which means you'd need to add a third camera. This means a 3D iPad would have 6 cameras built in - 3 on the front and 3 on the back. That's a lot of redesign and I doubt they have enough space to cram 6 cameras in the unit.

On top of that, once you rotate the iPad 90 degrees, the lenticular screen is no longer refracting images to your left and right eye - now they're going up and down so the 3D image doesn't work. I'm guessing it's possible to have a screen that refracts images in 4 directions but I don't think a screen like that has been invented yet.

    Just my two cents

    Agreed. Dream prices:

    20"= $450
    24"=$600
    30"=$1000

They could always fill the $2k dispay spot with a 50", HDTV Capable display that supported 20 million pixles :D

Would be nice to see those prices, but not in the next 3 years lol.

Would be interesting to see able phase out the 20" LCD, just have 24", 30", and a 41 or 42" LCD. All would be HD. True it be nice with the iSight, but arent they working on a new one anyways?

Also when are we going to see Blu-ray in Mac's? Hopefully sometime in 2007.

I have a feeling Apple going to phase out the 17" iMac. So it might give us room for a 30" iMac, anything possible. Thing is if Apple updates the Mac Mini too much, it be the similar to the iMac and pretty much the same price. Would be interesting to have a larger HD, better graphics chip in the Mac Mini. I still like the iMac, seeing its all in one.

Is it just me, or does the new iTunes logo look horrible in the dock? It doesnt seem to match anything, and it just doesnt look as "clean" as the typical dock logos have been/should be. When i went to click iTunes for the first time and it changed from the nice/clean green logo to this blue cheesy looking 1995 icon, I was pretty surprised!

it doesn't look right to me. The icon seems HUGE, it seems like the used every single pixel available to them while other icons were allowed to breathe.

What I don't like about my iPod Touch is that it takes 10-20 seconds to just load up the "music app". I've cleared off all files that weren't music, gone through numerous firmware updates. 29gb of music takes ages to load up.
Not so on my iPod 5.5G. Loads anything up instantly - songs, videos, photos. Feels like the powerhouse of MP3 players.

Apple hates physical buttons. No Apple device in the past ten years has ever moved backwards in the drive to eliminate physical buttons.

iPod 3G was fully touch operated (save for the hold switch).
iPod 4G+Photo went backwards and added physical buttons. To this day they still haven't gone back to the full touch design of the 3G.

Integrate motion sensors! With a flick of the wrist, the page will turn. Hot Damn!
Heh, and just like a real book, if there's a sudden draft, all the pages will flick past and you'll lose you place.

Considering that one of the first uses for most new technologies (such as the "book" and "moving pictures") has traditionally been porn, why not have an emergency "boss" or "wife" button to flick to a boring business report or something else preconfigured. Of course that might only work if they don't know of the feature themselves. iPorn. Gotta Love It.
