Is it for ipad also? I currently have my macbook in for repair, could i update in with my friend's pc who has itunes in the meantime?
I assume so. Usually it's released at the same time for all platforms.

I'm confused. Are iPad 2s in short supply or not? If they cannot be found at multiple Apple stores, why is Apple broadening distribution to Toys R us?
As someone else mentioned it broadens their supply chain and availablity when they are able to fill the channels with product. The iPad2 is selling faster than anticipated and faster than they can make them. They likely had a contract from the get go to bring Toys R Us into the supply chain at this time long before the iPad 2 was launched. They expected more supply at that time and wanted to broaden their exposure. Since they are partnering with Toys R Us, they don't just say, "Ah tough luck. We are selling them too fast, so we know we agreed to have you be able to sell them, but whatcha going to do." That is not how you treat business partners.
So they open up the channels and let it go. It is not like a national retailer puts a new product on the shelf, especially one like this, with 3 days notice. It takes time for them to get them into their system and their own distribution channels. Not to mention advertising and promotion and the rest.
Broadening distribution -- whether new territories or new outlets in established territories -- usually follows a slow down in sales growth.
Exactly, but you have to plan ahead for such things. Apple figured by now they would have enough excess supply to fill those channels. Sales have been better than anticipated.

It's not like there's a ton of USB 3 peripherals on the market yet. I could see Apple waiting till the next update on this one.
To call USB 2 "outdated" is kind of ridiculous. A few people have put it on a few computers and there are some peripherals out there. 98% of USB peripherals are still USB 2. Hardly outdated.
The sort of money you put down on a Mac you shouldn't expect anything less than USB 3.0 from here on out. Core 2 Duo in 2010 leaves a lot to be desired.

Speaking of Quicktime 7 - know anything that adds those features back?
You can install Quicktime 7 again from your Snow Leopard disc, it's in something like the 'extras' folder. It doesn't replace Quicktime X though; you'll have both.

The video is now posted on the Washington Post blog to see how they go about it. I'm watching it now. They do seem to stress that it's not an Apple vulnerability, but an 802.11 driver issue. Anyways, let's see what they can do.
1,000th post, sweet.
EDIT: Holy crap, that was pretty convincing to a relative amateur like me. They seemed to basically do whatever they wanted to the system. Was there something underhanded here that I didn't catch that would make this unusable in reality, or is there valid concern based on this demo?

Not interested in this. It's not really any more convenient to do this OTA. Just plug your phone in for 10 mins and install it in the evening. I could maybe see this working over Wi-Fi but for a lot of places this would destroy peoples data caps.

I just downloaded the update, it told me something failed and I need to restore my iPhone. I am on try 3 and it is still failing every time it tries to restore. It's giving me error code 1013. I would stay away from this update for at least a day or two until others give feedback. It doesn't seem to be that critical of an update anyways.
It's not bricked. You've been using TinyUmbrella, so it didn't allow the baseband to get updated. Fix your hosts file and it will be fine.

We always said that if Apple's arbitrary, inconsistent, and quite frankly baffling approval process didn't get straightened out soon, the defections were going to pick up pace -- and what do we have here? Joe Hewitt, the developer of the well-loved and highly regarded Facebook iPhone app, has flipped the script and rejected the App Store. And, as you'd expect, our man is not mincing his words, stating that his "decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple's policies," and that he's "philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process." While Hewitt can't comment on specific future projects (he's still at Facebook, but the app itself has been handed off to another developer) he has mentioned that he'll be devoting his time to web development for mobile devices. As you know, there is no approval process for the world wide web (which is apparent if you've spent any time on Geocities back in the day). Way to give 'em hell, Joe!Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/12/facebook-app-developer-rejects-app-store-irony-ensues/).

The ios iPod app is an abomination. Even with my moderately sized(about 3000 songs, most are just vocab flash cards) the thing chokes on my 3gs and even a bit on 1g iPad. It takes seconds, yes SECONDS to respond to input, not to mention all the crashing. Even if they could make a 128gb iPod touch, I would shudder to think at how insanely slow the iPod app would be if you loaded that puppy up with music.
In my case it's adding ONE podcast to listen too before bed, then waiting forever as it sits there "updating" the library. I can sync and start to listen to it in the same time on my classic.

Unnecessary Wars:
Revolutionary
War 1812
Civil War
Spanish American War
WW1
Korean War
Vietnam War
Desert Storm (Iraq 1.0) maybe necessary but easily avoided
Afghanistan
Iraq War
Curious about WWI. The Germans were attacking our merchant vessels and cruise ships with our citizens on them( now granted they were filled with weapons). The Germans were supposed to let the people abandon ship before they sunk it. They didn't do that with the Lusitania and in other cases I believe. So IMHO, WWI was a justified war.
Civil War I disagree with you as well.
But, my giant WTF goes to the bolded. You really think the Revolutionary War was unnecessary? How else would you have proposed separating from Britain?

I can offer a reason as to why some Mac Pro models don't have BT or Airport Extreme, a great deal of the corporate market don't want their machines to be equipped with them.
The company I work for will not purchase any machine with Bluetooth as it represents a risk to our highly confidential data. We could not allow a security vulnerability in a Bluetooth stack to allow security to be compormised or indeed just a rogue employee using BT to transfer data to a cell phone or other device.
Same goes for WiFi, although for some reason we don't see that as being that high a threat (Hey I don't make the rules I just have to follow them!)
This could be why the top end model is sans Bluetooth and WiFi, to keep the Corporate market sweet.
Just my 2 cents anyways:D

Professional, Amateur, Semi-Pro, weird guy living above your grandmother's garage, this argument is funny no matter who you are. What will happen with this is the same that has happened in every other industry where the democratization of technology allowed more people to access tools previously only available to 'the elite'.
Some will buy it and be able to do it themselves. Some will try it, settle with the results they achieve and convince themselves it is 'Good 'Nuff!' (until they run into the other 'Wall of eliteness'...Network Standards, etc.) Others will realize that a tool, no matter how cheap, doesn't make you an editor/mechanic/brain surgeon and they will then go and spend more money with you or other 'professionals' and get it done right. Only you'll be able to charge a rush fee because they will be in a hurry now. ;)

[...]or if you can go to the newsagency, download Wired or The Times via BlueTooth with an automatic transaction approved with a thumbprint.
The thumbprint thing might turn some people off, but just downloading the latest issue of whatever magazine you want to your iPod at the newsagency... mmh! :)

I would be slightly worried about jailbreaking an iPhone 5 then. Sony might claim ownership of the damn thing and sue you for doing so.

Wow. Here's a cookie.
Chocolate chip cookie? Those are my favourites! :)
Given that Clear Channel banned 4 Beatles songs in the wake of 9/11, the billboard prognostication by R0bert was slightly amusing.

I'd suggest that those who's careers are based on maintaining our military can file for unemployment and search the want ads just like everybody else.
Now there is a logical solution
it's a good thing you are not part of the decision making process
