Also, what about gods other than Jesus, are the good things performed in their name just as "selfless"?
Most of the jesus religions are exclusive (non-eclectic). Good can only come through jesus and his father. Things beyond or apart from them can be neutral or evil, but not good. That which arises from other sources has not been approved by the one true god and/or his son, so it cannot approach good. That which originates from another religion (sometimes even another sect of the same religion) must be bad or evil, because the beliefs that fail to properly recognize the truth of the saviour are corrupt and probably under the influence of the prince of darkness, bringer-of-light.

This attitude is real, persisting in the hearts and minds of the faithful. How intense it is varies from person to person, sect to sect, but I believe a similar sort of indoctrination is common with most of the other exclusive religions. This illustrates why I made the offensive statement on another thread, that believers seem to be functioning under self-imposed intellectual impairment.

Not only did 3D without glasses suck on the 3DS, it isn't even possible on an iPad. Just think about it: The iPad is always advertised as a very orientation independent device. But turning it from landscape to portrait would immediately kill the 3D effect. Unless Apple found some new "magic" 3D technology, this rumor is just complete bs in every way.

If Apple had produced everything within US borders, they wouldn't be as big as they are now. They wouldn't have experienced the same level of global growth, they wouldn't have had the funds to plough back into product research, design, development and manufacturing. And they sure wouldn't be as popular. As right now, guys, we non-Americanos don't see Apple as a solely American company. They're a global brand with a global, all inclusive vision at the core of each of their products. If you put the American flag on every Apple product, you'll lose customers.
I know what you're thinking, and you're wrong. The reason I know I'm right is Apple have far, far more gifted individuals on their finance and business team than moi. And they've chosen NOT to mass manufacture in the US. So, in a way, I've already won this argument. Whippey!

Anyway, enough tom foolery. I'm glad Brazil are receiving such a substantial investment. Great for South American markets and for Apple. India next in 5 years I'd imagine.

It would be really disappointing if they waited with this upgrade for mwsf 2007. I mean, what's new, apart from the very expected Core 2 Duo and the very slow upper hard drive option.

No, I expected at least a different Intel graphical chipset and an upgrade to 1 GB RAM over the full line. Also, it's still $1099, not $999.

Rather disappointing upgrade, Apple, whas this all you did in almost half a year of development?

You're surprised that Apple didn't start designing graphics chips for Intel?

It's a combination of things, but all pointing to the same fact. There's virtually no competition in the Mac marketplace. Competition is what drives innovation. It's what makes Intel and AMD keep cranking out faster chips. There is no such competition in the Mac marketplace. Until there is, we're going to be stuck with slow(er), more expensive hardware. And Apple is still going to be percieved as a miniscule presence.

I think Steve Jobs is a good showman, but I don't think he's a very good CEO. Apple needs an enterprise strategy. A results-oriented approach to getting business done, and integrating data across multiple platforms and industries. They need to gain wider acceptence of the Mac platform to create competition and development. That's the only way Apple is going to succeed as a company.

Lou Gerstner (who is by far one of the most brilliant business men of our age, next to Billiam Gates) said in 1999; the days of the personal computer are numbered and dwindling. Business, education, and home usage are all moving to web-centered resources: allowing integration and data unity across the board. Without an enterprise strategy, Apple won't survive. I'm not saying this to be a doom-and-gloom soothsayer. But I'm afraid it's true. Processor speed is only one crack in the hull, so to speak.

I reakon that the banner on the wall has another banner behind it and that The more posts I read and the discussion on 'is it or isn't it' the top banner and it will be removed after the keynote - I think it is a psyc-out. There are the usual banners hanging from the ceiling with the ubiquotous black clothes and I would think that if something major is on those puppies it/they will find their way to the banner on the wall as well )or more exactly - the banner under the banner on the wall!).

We all know Apple didn't get much press with the over-hyped 'iPod stereo' event - in fact more disappointment than praise - and the media was less than lukewarm after the announcement, so I think Apple are down-playing the WWDC with the banner which can only lead to the 'wow' factor if some new hardware is released - and i hope we don't get new hardware with no case redesign.

Although the 'G5' side shot could have a differnt front with the two drive bays, or be overall smaller but the same scale thus it looks like the existing model from the side (hope not as the cheese grater look is a little old) and cinema displays are conspicuos by their absence...

I can dream and will continue to do so until until next week...

Anyone with a lick of common sense could have guessed the timing for the Verizon iPhone last year so TechCrunch's source doesn't impress me that much.

I'm skeptical of these post June/July launch dates for the iPhone 5 but I suppose we will eventually find out.

Joe Hewitt said that the App Store is setting a precedent that the Store for a particular handheld device needs to have a review process. Other companies are following suit.
What other companies? Seems to me the new "kids on the block" are touting their openness as an advantage vs. the App Store.

If you're going to create an app for THEIR phone I can understand Apple making sure they accept it, but they need a better policy.
I'd say the policy is OK, they just need to apply it much more consistently.

I'll agree some of the comment's weren't in the best taste. But take a step back and look at some of the numbers they're really are some worrying disparities between black communities and other communities in the US (and apparently Britain as well).

    http://articles.cnn.com/2009-04-08/living/out.of.wedlock.births_1_out-of-wedlock-unwed-mothers-wedding-dress/2?_s=PM:LIVING

Almost 80% of black women give birth outside of wedlock. Which is roughly twice the average rate and 3 times the rate of white women. And a dis-proportionate number of crimes are committed by black men.

I'm NOT trying to claim that there aren't successful well educated black people out there. Obviously there are lots of them (including our current president) but your being delusional if you cannot recognize there are some very serious problems in the black community.

One obviously needs to consider factors like poverty, lack of education etc. And even today there are certainly lingering problematic ripples from slavery and segregation.

But there are cultural issues which members of the black community are going to have to confront.

--> Entertainment Role Models - There is a massive shortage of visible role models in the black community. Don't get me wrong I love rap and hip hop but it is abundantly clear that much of this music glorifies woefully poor behavior.

--> Language (you might be able to lump this in with education) I would never hire someone who can't speak passable English but never the less this ridiculous cultural lingo persists and propagates.

There are plenty of other problems to consider, but its seriously important that we start discussing this ****. Because the issues definitely aren't going go away if we close our ears and scream LALALALA !!

Of course these things need to be discussed openly and dealt with. The undertones of racism and stereotyping needs to be kept out of the process, however, as to make sure any real reforms are made.

    Go read their SEC filings.

    They make money selling hardware.

An operating system is a big complicated program that lets other big complicated programs co-exist peacefully on the same system. However, Apple does not generate much revenue from software sales. If they did, it would be a separate line item in their financials and they would probably need to disclose more information about software sales, since such a large part of the increase in shareholder value would be dependent on it.

Same deal with iTunes Store sales, App Store revenue, MobileMe subscriptions, etc. Not a major part of their bottom line. Apple uses software and content to drive sales of their high-margin hardware.

While what you say is definitely true, context matters! WWDC is not for hardware developers but is predominantly for software developers. If it is not a software company, why would so many software developers throng to their conference? Calling it a software company in this context does not take anything away from it being a hardware company, the way you describe it.

Well this is good news for me.

The website works to some extent for me. I have two batteries and it says one qualifies and the other does not, even though i have checked it several time to make sure and i am positive that my battery serial number falls in the range.

Oh well, will just have to phone the line when it comes back up.

Here's one of the better shots of a cup I was experimenting with last night.

    http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5172/5503824362_80b1ebbd6a_b.jpg

We had a set of those same cups when I was a kid. Your photo just took me back in time.

Photographed today at lake Leamy in Gatineau, near Ottawa. Very difficult to shoot them without a gazillion branchs around them, but then again, that is their environnement ;)

Outstanding capture! Excellent composition, color, and sharpness. Great catch light in the eye and just the right turn of the head to show off the crown and beak. I also like how the right part of the frame communicates the tangled nature of his habitat but is enough out of focus to be a subtle background element. I'd probably dodge that big white spot to his right a bit, but other than that, it's a terrific photo.

That's what I'm thinking. With Intel backing Clearwire and Apple and Intel are in love, I bet Apple will announce Wimax support on all new computers and devices. Ater all 2008 is the roll out for Wimax. Glad I own shares of Clearwire and Apple.

Seriously, i could care less about the wait...my computer works fine. I am currently using an Apple IIc...it kicks ass. I had to update it a bit to be able to use the internet though. Do you think i would be better to wait for the Santa Rosa platform to get a MBP? or just get the merom on the current.....and please don't say "if you keep waiting, there will always be something new around the corner and you will wait forever."

Web developers need to use approved open standards and stop using Flash as a crutch. And if by Apple's own image, you mean far superior open standards that are approved by the W3C, then yes!
How is using what's often times necessary a crutch? Trying putting any kind of multimedia on your website or handling reliable file uploads and you'll quickly see why you need Flash to reach the broadest audience. Developers have been shouting to the W3C for years for what we need and HTML5 still doesn't address much of the stuff you'd rely on Flash for.

Sadly, most Flash use is gratuitously used by developers with no html standards based alternative (which is stupid to say the least) so Flash gets a bad rap but when it's done well, it blends right in. There's a reason why Yahoo, Gmail, youtube, vimeo, etc. all use flash.

I am professional editor. I get paid to edit. I just dont edit giant films. I think there is a little discrediting going on for what makes a professional editor.......A good editor is a good editor, it is an art. Just because someone is an "expert" on AVID, PP, FCP doesnt mean they are an good editor. Same as someone who knows how to put paint on canvas isnt necessarily Van Gogh.
I think this version will help us tell stories easier and more efficient. It is still up to the editor what he/she will do with the tool.

    Amen!
